Biodiversity differentials between seagrass and adjacent bare sediment change along an estuarine gradient

چکیده
Differentials between the invertebrate biodiversity of seagrass (S) and adjacent bare sediment (B) were investigated at 8 localities spaced along axial gradient an estuarine system, that Knysna in South Africa; various assemblage metrics being compared paired S/B stations. Little or no S:B differentials found near mouth, but significant increase those both levels overall abundance taxon richness did occur upstream (in from <1 mouth to >2 towards head, 1 2). The habitat supporting greater therefore switched gradient. differential numbers co-dominant species assemblages also increased upstream, whereas taxonomic distinctness decreased. Functional diversity, evenness patchiness differentials, however, showed change; neither values Bray-Curtis similarity two types. Most affected epibenthic- subsurface-feeding components. As predicted, macrobenthic reacted differently gradient, enhanced much more upstream. However, location appeared equally important influence on composition presence absence seagrass. evident context-dependent nature such urges considerable caution extrapolation ecological indicators derived local areas wider regions.

متن کاملUnderwater Spectral Energy Distribution and Seagrass Depth Limits along an Optical Water Quality Gradient
We measured in situ inherent optical properties and seagrass maximum depth distribution in widely differing optical water types, including turbid green waters of the Indian River Lagoon (IRL, Florida, USA), a mix of turbid and clear waters in Panama, and very clear waters in Belize. We used Hydrolight to model in situ spectral energy distributions and measured leaf absorbance spectra (Thalassia...

Shifts in bacterioplankton community composition along the salinity gradient of the Parker River estuary and Plum Island Sound, in northeastern Massachusetts, were related to residence time and bacterial community doubling time in spring, summer, and fall seasons. Bacterial community composition was characterized with denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of PCR-amplified 16S ribosomal...

The contribution of terrigenous organic matter (TOM) to high molecular weight dissolved and particulate organic matter (POM) was examined along the salinity gradient of the Delaware Estuary. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) was fractionated by ultra®ltration into 1±30 kDa (HDOM) and 30 kDa±0.2 mm (VHDOM) nominal molecular weight fractions. Thermochemolysis with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH...
متن کاملLong-term patterns of an estuarine pathogen along a salinity gradient
Parasitic, disease-causing pathogens can exert strong control over marine populations yet few long-term studies exist that describe these relationships. Understanding the connections to longterm large-scale processes relative to local short-term processes should facilitate better planning for disease impacts in the management of marine resources. We describe a 21-yr dataset of dermo disease (Pe...
